PIANO ETUDES were written for choreographer Robert Bettmann and his Washington D.C.-based Blackbird Dance Ensemble (BDE). The Etudes were first performed in 2001 at the Washington Ballet Studios, the American Dance Festival (ADF) and for BDE's Summer 2002 northeast performance tour. Solo performances (without dancers) of the etudes began in 2002.

In the liner notes to "Piano Solo (Etudes)" (Airbox 05) Shapiro writes, "While the "etude" is known primarily as music that performers use to develop their technique, for me, these pieces are compositional etudes as well. I have been given the chance to develop my voice away from the studio based electronic music with which I am primarily involved." Two additional Piano Etudes, "Katz Etude" (Commissioned by Conrad Cummings on the occasion of Dr. Robert Katz's 40th birthday) and "Logemann Etude" (Commissioned Benjamin Rosen on the occasion of Jane Logemann's birthday) were composed Summer 2003.

INVISIBLE DAYS EP: Airbox | Blueblack | Richard Serra | Moon's Reflection

"...Shapiro blends the minimalist influence of Philip Glass with the moody pop sensibility of '80s New Wave. Using flutes, breathy vocals and pulsating synthesizers, the four tracks on this recording float through a nebulous soundscape singing of love and art." —New Music Box

Released Spring 2003, INVISIBLE DAYS EP was named one of the "Top 12" individually produced recordings of the year by Performing Songwriter magazine.

Keisha Hutchins, vocals; Andrew Shapiro, synthesizer, vocals; Peter Hess, flute
